The media was in Deep Ellum and no one
assaulted?
It is true! A crowd assembled out front of the Door last
Tuesday to celebrate the Talents of Frank Campagna
and Sergio Garcia. Check out the video of
the mural
going up of Mark Wahlberg in the new big feature of
Max Payne. Frank and Sergio were all over the news
shaking the hand of Mark Wahlberg with a plethora of
scenes of Deep Ellum. Thanks for the good work
guys.

And the good news from the media did not end there.
The Dallas Morning News did an article on Deep Ellum and DEEP. They
were trying to remind people
that Deep Ellum is not Dead, like we needed to hear
that again. Hopefully if enough of Dallas keeps saying
that maybe the rest of Dallas will find its way back
down.

The good news keeps rolling on in the hood. There
are plenty of updates about the Deep Ellum
Association (DEA) and the Deep Ellum Foundation
(DEF). Sean Fitzgerald is the new interim President
of the DEA (Gianna Medrini has termed out)
Tanner Hockensmith is the new Vice President. The
DEA and DEEP have been working together to
present a proposed budget to the DEF to further some
great events and get some new one’s rolling out for
2009. It is great to be in a situation where all of Deep
Ellum can start to look forward to new year full of
promise and high expectations.

The DEF is close to finishing a great new website for
DE. We will keep you informed. But that is not all that
has changed there. DEF has some new faces as
well.
John Hetzel is now Vice President, Mark Roberts is
the official representative from the DEA and on the
board, and a representative from the Ambrose is on
as
well. John Tatum has resigned.

Special thanks to
both Gianna and John for all your hard work.

Now more than ever we need to be secure in our
resolve to come together and make this the funkiest
and loudest place in all of D/FW. I like it…. Keep Deep
Ellum Loud.

If you missed him last week DO NOT do it again. Our
friend Cottonmouth, TX (Jeff
Liles) will
be spinning at “The Lounge” every Thursday
night. Make
sure to make an appearance and check out
the wide
variety of excellent tunes. I know Cottonmouth
will not
disappoint.

If you want to see Deep Ellum’s unique character, culture, and history survive, then you can help by joining the Deep Ellum Association individually or as a business. We recommend getting involved with the various community groups and making your voice heard at the small meetings hosted by neighborhood organizations throughout the month of July.

We need to get started as soon as possible with the meetings that were announced at last week’s Town Hall. The goal of the upcoming micro-meetings is to help identify the ideas, needs and goals of our neighborhood’s diverse groups, and to bring a variety of neighborhood groups and city officials together to see how each can assist and help the neighborhood thrive. The list of small micro-meetings to be held are listed below and will be hosted at Life in Deep Ellum and other area businesses.

The upcoming group meetings will have at least three main goals:

• To identify problems that the group is having and try to present solutions that can be reached among city and various Deep Ellum groups.
• Set up lines of communication between people in that group and continued meetings.
• Brainstorm marketing ideas, and other ways to promote neighborhood groups and businesses.

The Deep Ellum Association welcomes your input and wants to assist with any projects that fit Deep Ellum’s character, culture, and history.

so this one’ll be short and sweet. Instead of thinking ‘wow, he’s really
getting this out late…’ think of this as getting the word out early
because our next agenda is going to be all about the Mayor coming to Deep
Ellum Friday. He’s coming to talk to us all, to hear our concerns and
to ask us what we want him to do.

Sean Fitzgerald should attend
our meeting tonight to let us know what requests DEA will have with Mayor
and a similar request has been made with the DEF

D.E.E.P. will have a voice
along side the Deep Ellum Association, Foundation, Residence Council,
Preservation Dallas and others. We only have a short amount of time so
it’s best to make it count. Essentially the format of the town hall will
be to present ideas to the Mayor for the first hour with him responding
for the second. Afterward he may or may not be available for extended
questions. This is the first of many town hall style conversations with
the Mayor Deep Ellum intends to have.

The Town Hall is Friday June
27 from 2-4 p.m. at Sons of Herman Hall. All are encouraged to attend,
the mayor needs to see who those people are who live, work & play
in this neighborhood. Frankie 45 will perform before as well as photo/
video presentation on the neighborhood

And a quick update
about last week’s Crime Watch:

It was a small crowd but a powerful one… case in point was when Sgt.
D. Conley spoke with Senator West’s people about how the laws concerning
metal theft could better be written to help alleviate the problem. Senator
West helps write and vote on the laws that Sgt. Conley must enforce and
having these two together for even a short period of time could make a
huge difference.
